Electrodes are placed on the skin over the targeted muscle group. These electrodes are connected to an EMS device, which generates electrical impulses.
The EMS device generates controlled electrical impulses. These impulses mimic the electrical signals that the brain sends to the muscles to initiate contractions.
The electrical impulses from the electrodes stimulate the motor nerves that innervate the muscles. These motor nerves are responsible for transmitting signals from the brain to the muscles, causing them to contract.
When the motor nerves receive the electrical impulses, they trigger muscle contractions. The contractions produced by EMS are involuntary, meaning that you don’t have to consciously engage the muscles.
EMS can recruit a higher percentage of muscle fibers compared to voluntary contractions during traditional exercise. This is because EMS can activate both larger and smaller motor units, leading to a more comprehensive muscle activation.
The frequency (number of electrical pulses per second) and intensity (strength of the electrical pulses) of the EMS device can be adjusted. These settings influence the type of muscle fibers recruited and the depth of muscle stimulation.
EMS devices can be programmed to deliver different contraction patterns, such as continuous contractions, intermittent contractions, or varying intensities. This allows for customization based on the desired outcome.
EMS can also be used to induce muscle relaxation. By adjusting the frequency and intensity of the electrical impulses, EMS can help relieve muscle tension and spasms.
